Description of App

Have you ever been stuck in a country wanting to be polite but having no idea how to even say 'please' or 'thank you'? Or needed to get somewhere quickly but been frustrated because you couldn't even ask for basic directions in the local language?

At WorldNomads.com, we have, and so we produced a series of free language guides for adventure travelers that contain a conversational language lesson with a local, plus basic phrases to help keep you traveling safely.

These Apps are based on our existing travelers language guide podcast series that we started in 2006 & now covers 25 languages including Mandarin, Spanish, Indonesian, French, Japanese, Italian, Thai, Hindi, Lao, Arabic, Malay, Russian, German, Dutch & Nepali.

Future updates will include more phrases & functionality.

Accessibility Comments

Two minor issues: after you tap on the phrase you want to hear spoken, VoiceOver helpfully repeats what you tapped at the same time as the speaker is pronouncing the word: turn VO off or listen carefully. Flick through character by character for the spelling which will give you the pronunciation. Second, note that tone numbers are not present: they have been replaced by accent marks on the vowels. the whole thing is nicely romanized though so you do not have to deal with chinese characters.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labelling

All buttons are clearly labelled.

Usability

There are some minor accessibility issues with this app, but they are easy to deal with.

Other Comments

It's terrific: not entirely suitable for very young children: these World Nomad fellows have a little edge to them: funny edge, but an edge.http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/world-nomads-mandarin-language/id297252887?mt=8
