This fully-live, always up-to-date, connected experience leverages the full power of the iPhone. MotionX uses the latest NAVTEQ maps, Bing search, and live predictive traffic information from INRIX to deliver the most complete navigation solution designed exclusively for the iPhone.

MotionX is committed to passing on to our customers the best possible pricing for guidance services and turn-by-turn routing. We ourselves must pay the data suppliers and therefore must charge a minimum fee for this service. We focus on providing the best value for quality information.

MotionX is committed to constant improvement. We listen to our users and continuously add the most requested features.

Note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

#1 This app is accessible.

Submitted by John Moore on 6 January 2011.

I said I would never post on this site again, but this entry and my trial use of this app prompted me to do otherwise. This app is accessible if you click the Menu button in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. Then the buttons become labelled, and things can be done with it. You have to touch the screen a lot to refresh it, but this app is useable. If anyone would like help, feel free to contact me and I will show you how to do it.

#2 This App is now mostly accessible plus more (see description)

Submitted by Bryan Jones on 13 February 2011.

This is regarding MotionX GPS Drive version 9.1, released 10 February 2011.
Most of the buttons and labels are now accessible and this GPS App offers some important features that I think are not yet available in Navigon, Garmin or Tom-Tom.
First I'll list the two features I think make this GPS app stand out, then I'll list some of the issues with the app.
1. The current version of this App gives automatically spoken turn-by-turn directions with no button pressing, shaking, or any other sort of interaction required.
2. Cloud based maps that can be pre-loaded when planning your route. You can select the amount of storage space to use, from 256 MB up to 2 GB, and there is an accessible meter telling how much storage you've used. There's also a button to clear the cached maps. When you choose to pre-load maps, there is an accessible progress indicator. Thus you can pre-load maps while wi-fi connected to help minimize cellular data usage and in addition you will still theoretically be receiving directions on your trip even if you've lost your cellular data connection. Also, when you choose to pre-load your maps you have a choice to listen to a simulation of your route. This is spoken just as if you were en route, including the time between turns, and while there is a setting to run the simulation at 8x, I've been unable to find a way to manually force the simulation to move to the next turn.

Issues:
1. Most buttons on the "Search" page are not labeled, but fortunately you can work around this by using the "Go To" page instead, which has well labeled buttons and, as far as I can tell, allows you to perform all of the same functions found in the Search page.
2. The button in the top left corner of every screen is labeled "button ondemand up." If you double-tap it will either tell you to select a destination or tell you the current segment of your trip
3. While there is a screen that lists all the segments of your trip and allows you to quickly swipe through them, VO is able to read everything except the part that tells you which way to turn. There is a little graphic of an arrow pointing left or right, but VO is not able to read them.
4. The default list of POI around my home address was severely lacking. However, when I searched for POI and entered my address manually, I got much better results.
5. There are some other minor glitches but overall I think this App is worth a look.

#4 motionxgps drive

Submitted by brandon armstrong on 13 February 2011.

hi their, I use this app on a day to day bases when traveling on trips. I'm currently working with the developer on voiceover improvements, and their very responsive. I would encourage anyone who wants to use this app and have suggestions to write the developer and see if they will put in your feature suggestions. I for one would also like for them to put in when their are traffic problems that the tts announces what they are such as traffic jams, stalls, accidents etc. This app like i said has some button issues but the developer has promised me that voiceover improvement is coming. everyone write them and suggest some features for us. their very nice and helpful.

#5 this is actually my current favorite navigation app

Submitted by Mike Arrigo on 6 July 2011.

The app has become quite useable. I have also emailed the developer and let them know about the unlabeled buttons, they were very responsive and say that they will fix this. In the mean time, if you want to use the search screen, the 2 most important unlabeled buttons to know are the first and second ones. The first one allows you to enter an address, and the second allows you to search for a point of interest. The other buttons provide quick access to categories, but you can use the go to screen for that, and everything is labeled on that screen. This app never really opens a new window which is why voiceover does not automatically start at the top of the screen after activating an item. Usually, tapping in the middle of the screen will allow the new content to be read. I like that the current voice instruction can easily be repeated with this app, and earlier this year they added the ability to speak street names. It uses the acapela TTS, and includes Heather free, other voices can be purchased inside the app. The walking directions are very good, and entering addresses is much easier in this app than with Navigon or TomTom, just enter the address, no need to go through several screens. I have several GPS apps on my iphone, and this one has become my favorite one.

#6 Interoperability with Where To?

Submitted by Ortwin Gentz on 20 July 2011.

MotionX GPS drive users might be interested in a new feature in the location finder app "Where To? - Discover your next destination" (mentioned also on this site: http://www.applevis.com/app-directory/utilities/where-discover-your-next-destination).

Where To? focuses on the process of finding points of interest around you and showing detailed information for them. It now allows to send a found location over to MotionX for getting directions. The two apps work together very well.

#7 Latest update of MotionX GPS Drive labels buttons

Submitted by Esther on 17 February 2012.

The most recent update of MotionX GPS Drive (v. 13.0, released 16 February 2012) now has labeled the previously unlabeled buttons on the "Search" screen that is the first screen viewed by new users of the app. There are a few other added labels, but this is the main change in the update. Many of these options could be accessed from the "Go To" screen, as Bryan noted, in an earlier comment. The main difference is that instead of a single long list on the "Go To" screen that you scroll through, there are separate smaller lists grouped by categories, and much better access to POI categories. So if you wanted to find nearby restaurants or coffee shops, there are separate dedicated buttons for "Coffee" and "Dining", along with a general "Browse" button with more detailed POI categories to explore. There are also separate buttons for looking up "Wikipedia" entries about nearby POIs, as well as for "Twitter" and "Facebook". The "Back" button to return to the search screen for these button option screens in the top left corner, but just to the right of the "Voice On Demand" button.

I noticed that many users of the MotionX GPS Drive app didn't notice any changes, which is probably an indication of how many people were using this app without problems despite the unlabeled buttons on the Search screen. Also, if you use a helper app like AroundMe or Where To?, you're even less likely to have noticed problems with the unlabeled buttons in previous versions of this app. The current version is also supposed to have improved compatibility with GPS helper apps.

#8 Yes the new version, version

Submitted by Mike Arrigo on 17 February 2012.

Yes the new version, version 13.0 has fixed the unlabeled controls. This app is my favorite navigation app for the iphone, because of the issues with navigon in the newest versions, everyone should really consider this app, the prices are very reasonable as well, and I think in many cases, the directions are better with this app.

#9 Are there any other

Submitted by Juan Avila on 12 April 2012.

Are there any other accessible gps apps on the iPhone or iPad with voice over, which don't require a monthly or yearly suscription? Some that I'm interested in are Skobbler, gps kit app, highway gps navigation turn by turn voice guidance, maps buddy, tacttical nav, and VGPS. If you have any experience with any of these apps or have any suggestions please tell me.
