Enjoy premium navigation features from Garmin, the world leader in GPS navigation:

GET TURN-BY-TURN DIRECTIONS. Garmin StreetPilot® is so easy to use. Its intuitive interface greets you with two simple options: "Where To?" and "View Map." Look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that speak street names to your destination. It uses detailed City Navigator® NT street maps, featuring millions of POIs, 2-D or 3-D map views and speed limits for most major roads in the U.S.

ALWAYS THE LATEST MAPS. Garmin StreetPilot® uses the same premium quality City Navigator® NT map data available for Garmin’s nüvi® product line. Map data loads directly from the Garmin servers, so your maps are always up-to-date. Due to its small file size, StreetPilot loads quickly – ready to go when you are!

KNOW THE LANE BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE. No more guessing which lane you need to be in to make an upcoming turn. Lane assist with junction view guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. It realistically displays road signs and junctions on your route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.

REAL-TIME TRAFFIC UPDATES. Steer clear of traffic with integrated traffic updates. Receive alerts about traffic delays and road construction on your route so you can avoid them.

Garmin StreetPilot® has been designed to run on iPhone 3, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 and works in compatibility mode on the Apple iPad as well. Higher resolution maps are available on iPhone 4 to make best use of the Retina display.

Please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Accessibility Comments

This app is quite accessible, though the interface does take a bit of getting used to. Most of the buttons are labeled a bit oddly, but it's easy to tell what they do. For example, the weather button says something like, weather normal, and the where to button, which is the one you will use most often says something like where to normal button. Also, you have a few buttons, then after those you have labels that will say things like weather and where to, you can just ignore those and activate the buttons. While following a root, there are a couple buttons with odd labels, the main button of interest is the last item on this screen, it says something like map bubble day normal. Activating it gives you a screen to do things like cancel a root or see a list of directions. This app has some major advantages and at this point, one major disadvantage compared to navigon and TomTom. First, the app is much smaller, about 7 MB in size, it downloads maps as needed, so you need to be in a coverage area for it to work, however, these days that should not be a problem. It's easier to enter addresses in the Garmin street pilot than in Navigon or TomTom. For one thing, you don't need to enter or select a city unless your destination is in a different city than your current location. This is something I wish Navigon and TomTom would do as well. When entering the address, you have 2 text fields, one for the house number, and one for the street, no need to switch screens to enter this information, so it's much faster. You can also configure the program to ask you each time if you want a walking or driving root, and if driving, if you want the shortest or fastest root, this is good because you won't have to go in to settings each time to change this. Now for the big disadvantage, and for some of you this may be a deal breaker. At this point, the program does not appear to provide voice guidance on walking roots, it just beeps when you approach your turn. However, I would suggest that we write Garmin and suggest this feature, if it has this feature, it could be one of the best GPS apps for the iphone. The traffic and map updates are also free. Also, the weather screen reads very well with Voiceover. Overall, this is a good accessible GPS app, hopefully Garmin will add walking root voice instructions in an update.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labelling

Most buttons are clearly labelled.

Usability

There are some accessibility issues with this app, but it can still be used if you are willing to tolerate these issues and learn how to work around them.

It doesn't do virtual roots, you can however view a list of root instructions, actually this app works the best for that I think.

oh ok. I was thinking about purchasing this app, from what i understand, it downloads a map of your area and only downloads if you go outside of your area? is this right?
